Types of Dental Plans: HMO vs PPO
We offer a wide range of creative services. Take a look at what we can offer to your company.
Dental HMO (DHMO – Dental Health Maintenance Organization)
A DHMO plan is a cost-effective option that typically offers lower monthly premiums and minimal or no deductibles. Members are required to choose a primary care dentist from the plan’s network, who manages all their dental care and referrals to specialists if needed. While out-of-pocket costs are generally lower and more predictable, the trade-off is less flexibility, as services are only covered when using in-network providers.
*Lower monthly premiums and predictable costs
*Requires selecting a primary dentist within the network
*Limited to in-network providers only
Dental PPO (DPPO – Preferred Provider Organization)
A DPPO plan offers more freedom when selecting a dentist, allowing members to visit both in-network and out-of-network providers. There is no requirement to choose a primary dentist or get referrals for specialists, making it convenient for those who want control over their care. While premiums and out-of-pocket costs may be higher compared to DHMO plans, PPO plans provide a wider network and more flexibility, which many employees find valuable.
*Greater flexibility in choosing dentists, both in and out of network
*No need for referrals to see specialists
*Higher premiums but broader access to care
Choosing the Right Plan for Your Needs
Choosing between a DHMO and PPO plan depends on individual needs and priorities. If affordability and predictable costs are most important, a DHMO plan may be the best fit. However, if flexibility in choosing providers and easier access to specialists is a priority, a PPO plan may be more suitable. Understanding how often dental services are needed and whether a preferred dentist is in-network can help employees make the right decision.
*Budget vs flexibility considerations
*Frequency of dental visits and procedures
*Preferred dentists and provider access
